Washing your hair with baking soda has become a popular alternative to traditional shampoo, but is it actually beneficial for your hair? While baking soda can be a great household cleaner, it’s not the best choice for your hair. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at three reasons why you should never wash your hair with baking soda.

Reason 1: Baking soda is too alkaline for your hair

Baking soda has a pH level of 9, which is significantly higher than the pH level of healthy hair, which is between 4.5 and 5.5. Using a product with a pH level that is too high can cause your hair to become dry and brittle, which can lead to breakage and damage. Additionally, using baking soda on your hair can disrupt your scalp’s natural pH balance, which can lead to irritation and dandruff.

Reason 2: Baking soda can strip your hair of its natural oils

Baking soda is a strong cleanser, and while it can effectively remove dirt and buildup from your hair, it can also strip your hair of its natural oils. These oils are essential for maintaining the health and moisture of your hair, and without them, your hair can become dry, frizzy, and prone to breakage.

Reason 3: Baking soda can cause hair color to fade

If you color your hair, it’s important to be mindful of the products you use on it. Baking soda can cause hair color to fade, especially if you use it regularly. The harsh cleansing properties of baking soda can strip the color from your hair, leaving you with dull, faded, and uneven color.

While baking soda may seem like a natural and affordable alternative to traditional shampoo, it’s not the best choice for your hair.

Its high pH level, ability to strip natural oils, and potential to fade hair color can all cause damage and dryness to your hair. Instead, stick to a pH-balanced shampoo and conditioner that’s formulated specifically for your hair type. Regular trims, use of hair oils and treatments can help keep your hair healthy and nourished. It’s always best to consult with a hair stylist or a trichologist if you’re experiencing hair concerns.
